HK broadband services cheapest in the region

Hong Kong happens to offer the cheapest broadband connection within Asia Pacific, a study conducted by Asia Pacific Carriers’ Coalition was revealed recently. 

The study reported that the rates of broadband leased lines in the city at transmission speeds of 1.5 Mbps, 2 Mbps, 45 Mbps and 155 Mbps are cheaper than in 14 other countries. The study covered Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. 

The cost of broadband access fell on an average of 30 to 50 percent between 2006 and 2009. Technically this is the same as offering faster lines at the same price. While a few players are notable in Hong Kong’s broadband Internet market – notably PCCW’s Netvigator, Cable and Hong Kong Broadband Network – there are 12 local wireline-based carriers and 29 cable-based external carriers operating, so there is no monopoly of service which may influence competitiveness.

Growing up in the Philippines at a time when Internet connection was new, my excitement at checking my Rocketmail account is often superseded by the amount of time needed to load the inbox. Let alone for sites powered by Flash presentations, at the time the face of “cutting-edge websites”.
