India to have 55 million 3G subscribers by 2013

All the big money which Indian telcos have put in to buy 3G spectrums might not go waste. As per RNCOS, the number of 3G mobile subscribers is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 80 percent every year for the period 2011 – 2013. if so, 3G subscribers will reach 55 million by 2013.

If 3G subscriptions go up to 55 million in two years then that would be way more than India’s current number of Internet subscribers, which are pegged at 16 million as per the recent figures from TRAI. India’s current Internet subscriptions are on slow speeds, some even less than 256 kbps. India’s broadband definition is the speed greater than 256 kbps. And there are 10 million broadband connections but the speeds fall in the range of 256 kbps to 2 Mbps.

3G which can offer download speeds up to 7 MBps would be a savior of sort if the figure of 55 million is achieved. And 55 million figure isn’t far fetched. India already has 210 million users accessing data services using 2G network. The biggest jump coming in the last one year where it raised by 70%. Can the same growth be achieved with 3G?
