India: Use Google+ with just SMS

Google+, the new social phenomenon from Google which already has 4.5 million users hooked, just got niftier. In addition to its extremely usable website, a mobile website, and Android app, Google+ has gone one step further and introduced text messaging (SMS) integration. SMS integration works for folks in the US and India. Tell you what, it is carrier agnostic in India and works like a charm. You will be amazed at the speed at which these updates appear on the stream.

What do you need? A Google+ account, a mobile phone and to register your number with your Google+ account. You don’t need patience for this set-up as it can be done in less than two  minutes. Go to this page, enter your phone number, edit the rest of the settings in the same page and you are all set. Test it out by sending an SMS to 92222-22222. The default message will be shared with public.

If you want to share with a selected group then use the group name and prefix it with @. If the whole circle thing is confusing then probably sending it via an SMS would simplify matters for you. All you need to do to share it with a particular circle is prefix the circle name with @. Of course, you have to remember the circle you want to share with.

@[circle name]
To share with a specific circle, append your post with @[circle name]. For example: “Will see you at the game @soccerfolks”.

extended circles , append your post with @extended. For example: “Any SF restaurant recommendations? @extended”.

@public
To share your post publicly, append your post with @public. Public posts are viewable by anyone on the web. For example: “Any SF restaurant recommendations? @public”.

When you share something publicly, it may appear in search results.

@[email address]
To share your post with a specific person, append your post with @[email address]. For example, “In SF for the week @jazzguitar9@gmail.com” will be visible to jazzguitar9@gmail.com.

You can send a quick email too with just an SMS. Enter the message and append it with the email address.  It’s important to keep your circle names short and without spaces, if you plan to use it via SMS.

The 160 character limit of a text message still remains. So prioritizing is the key. But that might already be a second nature for you Tweeple.
