Singapore Gears Up for Social Media Week

Just as Kuala Lumpur is counting down to their Malaysia  Social Media Week (MSMW) activities, Singapore is also lining up SMW Afternoon Speakeasy sessions, speeches and contests for 13 to 17 February 2012.

Social Media Week Singapore (SMWS) promises to include and benefit a whole range of industries in the island state.

SMW is a global conference connecting people, content and conversations around emerging trends in social and mobile media. Delivered through a network of creative conferences and streamed online through social media, SMW reaches an extensive network of people (including C-level executives, entrepreneurs, journalists, bloggers, brand managers, social media strategists, artists, activists and the technology/media digerati), connecting and communicating ideas and experiences to advance our understanding of social media’s role in society.

This is the first time the SMW will be held in Singapore, as brought together by AKA Asia. SMW will run simultaneously in 21 cities; including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Vancouver, Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Istanbul, London, Paris, Rome, Milan, Glasgow, Berlin, Moscow, Beirut and Hong Kong.

SMWS activities include Afternoon Speakeasy sessions, where speakers talk about a wide range of topics including the “socialization” of Nokia; the legal aspects of social media; anecdotal presentations of the effect of social media by six Singaporean personalities.

Grant Hunter and David Brown of UrgentGenius.com will talk about love in the time of social media, while Henry Mason of  TrendWatching.com and Alan Soon from Yahoo will deliver keynote speeches on the implications of social media on consumers.

Nokia is sponsoring a collage-cum-photo contest called Amazing Everyday Singapore. Five Nokia Lumia 800 mobile phones will be awarded to the most amazing shots.

An interesting aspect of SMW is the upcoming social media experiment: Can Man Live on Social Media Alone? Martin from the UK and Daphne from Singapore will swap cities and try to survive (and perform tasks) for 5 days with just their Lumia 800, their social media contacts, plus 10 essential items. Martin (#CanManLondon) will present his story at the SMWS on 16 February at 11AM Singapore time while Daphne (#CanManSG) will present her story at the SMW Opening Reception on Monday 13 February at 7PM London time.

The duo have started chronicling their coming adventure on Facebook, with Martin already getting offers of tours, meals and EZ-link cards (Singapore’s multi-purpose fare and payment card, the Oyster card equivalent in London). Daphne, on the other hand has been given advice how to keep warm (layers) and even has a standing offer on a Valentine’s date, or a fun-filled night at the London Museum.

Looking forward to the SMWS next week, especially the outcome of the social media experiment.
