Amazon’s latest toolkit helps you quickly create VR, AR and 3D apps

WHEN it comes to interactive content, Amazon probably isn’t the first company that springs to mind. But the Internet giant has unveiled Sumerian, a new developer service which promises to simplify creating AR, VR and 3D apps online.

According to a blog post by Amazon, Sumerian does not require any specialized programming or 3D expertise and can be accessed directly from your browser.

According to Amazon, Sumerian is “platform-agnostic”. Users can build immersive and interactive scenes that run on popular hardware such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and iOS mobile devices.

Amazon’s latest toolkit makes it easy for users to create everything needed to create immersive, interactive 3D experiences. This includes adding objects such as characters, furniture and landscape, as well as designing, animating and scripting environments.

Amazon’s new service boasts many use cases, including employee education, training simulations, retail and sales, and virtual concierge.

“You can build a virtual classroom that lets you train new employees around the world, or you can build a virtual environment that enables people to tour a building remotely,” the blog post reads.

Perhaps the biggest benefit of this service is the fact it is so readily available. On top of this, the service is free to use by everyone. Users will just need to pay for the amount of storage space their creation takes up.

Through this free and “simple” service, Amazon are making AR and VR app creation easier for those companies who may not have the expertise and resources of a professional software developer.

While, of course, driving more people to Amazon Web Services, the highly accessible service could also lead to an increase in AR and VR apps in the future.
