StarHub launches CyberProtect to boost mobile security

Cyberattacks continue to be a big problem in Southeast Asia, especially for small and medium-sized businesses. In fact, most security reports indicate increasing cyberattacks over the last two years, with ransomware being the biggest culprit.

In Singapore, the Singapore Computer Emergency Response Team (SingCert) advised companies to strengthen their cyber security, vigilance, and online defenses to protect themselves from cyber-attacks such as Web defacement, distributed denial of service (DDoS), and ransomware. DDoS attacks swamp targets traffic and disables their IT systems.

With demand for cybersecurity protection increasing, some businesses are seeking simple and affordable cybersecurity services to keep themselves safe. This includes having cybersecurity apps on endpoint devices like mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.

While cybersecurity apps offer basic protection to mobile devices, their adoption has been increasing in countries like Singapore. The Digital Readiness Survey by Singapore’s Ministry of Communications and Information showed two-thirds of Singaporeans would use antivirus software on devices but 40% had installed cyber security apps on their mobile phones.

As such, StarHub has launched CyberProtect. CyberProtect is an all-in-one online protection cybersecurity service that integrates antivirus, virtual private network (VPN) access, and advanced parental controls in a single app. Delivering on its DARE+ strategy of enhancing customers’ digital lives with enriching services, StarHub is building a bubble of safety for customers to be entertained and productive online.

Designed more for consumers, CyberProtect is powered by F-Secure, a global cybersecurity vendor. The solution can be installed on multiple devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and PCs belonging to individuals and families to protect them against viruses, ransomware, and other harmful apps that steal users’ personal data.

According to Johan Buse, Chief, Consumer Business Group at StarHub, the greatest challenge for customers in cybersecurity is no longer failing to recognize that they are vulnerable targets, but not knowing what to do about it. He added that every time a new form of online threat surfaces, a fresh burden weighs on the minds of customers, and their online experience becomes riddled with worries.

“With CyberProtect, our goal is to simplify cybersecurity for customers, giving them peace of mind when they go online. We are eliminating the need for multiple apps to defend customers against different types of online threats and providing a comprehensive service that will deliver both security and privacy. While there is no silver bullet in cybersecurity, this is a solution that works in tandem with sensible practices, to deliver an effective layer of protection that keeps customers safe,” commented Buse.

Compared to traditional antiviruses that only scan devices, CyberProtect goes a step further to detect and remove malware automatically. This cutting-edge behavior-based protection technology of CyberProtect accelerates responses to new threats on customers’ devices, quickly eliminating dangerous programs behind the scenes.

At the same time, CyberProteect also provides access to VPN enabling users to encrypt their connection to surf, stream, and network online in total privacy. This is especially important for customers when connecting to public WiFi, a VPN prevents snooping from hackers and trackers.

It is important to note that while CyberProtect is catered towards consumers, StarHub also has solutions that are specifically designed for enterprises. These include their Managed Secure Access Service Edge (Managed SASE) service and StarHub CyberSecure Business Solution. Managed SASE simplifies and automates cyber threat protection and multi-site network management through the cloud while StarHub CyberSecure Business Solution provides a suite of cyber defenses for enterprises, securing network frontlines as well as back-end systems.

As part of the Governance pillar under StarHub’s ESG Sustainability strategy, StarHub offers a full suite of cybersecurity services to help large enterprises, small businesses, government clients, and consumers safeguard against cyber risks.
