Huawei unveils new cloud region in Indonesia

Cloud regions are becoming increasingly in demand in Southeast Asia as the region continues to deal with issues on data sovereignty. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alibaba have already built or announced plans to build their cloud regions in different countries in the region.

Indonesia, which is already home to several cloud regions, will now have another one added to it. At the Huawei Connect event in Bangkok, Zhang Ping’an, the CEO of Huawei Cloud, announced the launch of new Huawei Cloud Regions in Indonesia as well as in Ireland. The Chinese tech company is expected to operate 75 availability zones in 29 regions around the world by the end of 2022, boosting services for more than 170 countries and regions.

Launching its “Go Cloud, Go Global” ecosystem plan, Huawei Cloud and its partners are looking to focus on Everything as a Service with the hope of accelerating the development of a global digital industry ecosystem for joint innovation and shared success.

Huawei Cloud sticks to the approach of “by local, for local” for building a global digital ecosystem. Over the next three years, Huawei Cloud will provide support for at least 10,000 promising startups around the world, with support including cost optimization, technical support, entrepreneurship training, and other business resources. More than 120 enterprises in the Asia Pacific have joined the Huawei Cloud Startup Program.

Ken Hu, Rotating Chairman of Huawei

Meanwhile, in his keynote address, Ken Hu, Rotating Chairman of Huawei highlighted that organizations should embrace the cloud for leapfrog development as digital smart tech is the future. With over 240 services integrated, Huawei Cloud brings the last AI, application development, and big data technologies through more than 50,000 APIs and development tools to the cloud.

Hu also outlined three ways the ICT ecosystem can help break through common barriers in digital transformation. The first is through boosting digital infrastructure. This includes having more robust connectivity and stronger, more diverse computing resources. Next, organizations need to go beyond simple cloud adoption and truly make the most of the cloud, focusing on advanced technology services that drive leapfrog development. Lastly, it is about building out their local digital ecosystems, including partner development, strengthening the digital talent pool, and providing more support for SMEs.

“Going digital is clearly the right choice. The demand is there, and so are the technologies. The world is unleashing digital productivity, and it’s happening right now,” said Hu.

At the event, Huawei reinforced its commitment to open collaboration and shared success. Despite sanctions by the US and certain countries, the company called for governments and enterprises to work more closely together to cultivate local digital ecosystems that build up innovation partners, strengthen the talent pool, and support startups.

According to Simon Lin, the President of Huawei Asia-Pacific Region, APAC is standing at the forefront of the global digital landscape. Lin added that Huawei is committed to becoming a key contributor to the digital economy in the region and will keep supporting its digitalization and sustainable development efforts, and building out the industry ecosystem.
