The memory chip shortage 2026 is shaping up to be one of the semiconductor industry’s most challenging supply crises—and it’s about to get personal for anyone planning a tech upgrade.

Samsung Electronics quietly raised prices on certain memory chips by as much as 60% compared to September levels, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters

The move underscores how the AI data centre boom has created what Silicon Motion CEO Wallace C. Kou describes as “never happened before”—a simultaneous severe shortage of HDDs, DRAM, HBM, and NAND flash.

“Most of our capacity [is] sold out,” Kou said during the company’s recent earnings call, painting a stark picture of 2026’s supply landscape.

AI’s insatiable appetite

The culprit behind the 2026 memory chip shortage is no mystery: artificial intelligence infrastructure. As hyperscalers race to build out data centres capable of training and running increasingly sophisticated AI models, they’re consuming memory at unprecedented rates.

Samsung’s latest price hikes target DDR5 memory modules used primarily in servers. Contract prices for 32GB DDR5 modules jumped from US$149 in September to US$239 in November, according to Tobey Gonnerman, president of semiconductor distributor Fusion Worldwide. 

Other capacities saw similar spikes—16GB modules rose 50% to US$135, while 128GB units climbed to US$1,194.

“Many of the largest server makers and data centre builders are now accepting that they won’t get nearly enough product,” Gonnerman told Reuters. “The price premiums being paid are extreme.”

Reuters’ report quoted TrendForce analyst Ellie Wang expecting Samsung to push quarterly contract pricing 40-50% higher in the October-December period—well above the 30% industry average. 

The company’s competitive positioning actually benefits from its slower pivot to advanced AI chips, giving it stronger pricing power than rivals SK Hynix and Micron, according to Jeff Kim, head of research at KB Securities.

The ripple effect across the supply chain

What makes this memory chip shortage 2026 particularly concerning is how rapidly it’s cascading through the entire technology ecosystem.

China’s SMIC warned on Friday that memory shortages are creating bottlenecks even when other components remain available—smartphone manufacturers simply cannot complete assembly without sufficient memory. Co-CEO Haijun Zhao indicated that with handset prices holding steady, negotiations are underway to determine whether other chip prices might drop in 2026 to offset surging memory costs.

The pressure extends to device brands facing rising DRAM and NAND costs, who have little choice but to demand price concessions from logic IC suppliers. 

“IC design houses and foundries with weaker bargaining power will be forced to concede on pricing to keep orders and utilisation up,” according to analysis from WJ Capital Perspective cited by Commercial Times.

Even NVIDIA may feel the squeeze. Industry observers suggest the company’s upcoming RTX 50 series (Blackwell) gaming GPUs—originally slated for early 2026 launch—could see production and sales delays due to significantly higher memory content requirements.

DDR4, NAND, and NOR Flash are all tightening

The memory chip shortage in 2026 isn’t limited to cutting-edge DDR5. DDR4 supply faces particular pressure as major suppliers accelerate phase-outs and shift mature-node capacity toward HBM and DDR5 production. WJ Capital Perspective estimates DDR4 could face a shortfall of around 50,000 wafers by the end of 2025, with 2026 unlikely to fully close the gap.

NAND flash pricing could rival or exceed DRAM gains in 2025-2026, driven by strategic shifts among hyperscalers considering QLC eSSD deployments to replace portions of HDD cold storage infrastructure. High-capacity QLC eSSDs, automotive NAND, and enterprise SSDs are expected to see the strongest demand support.

Even NOR flash—traditionally a smaller market—is surging within AI server designs. In NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL72 system, NOR content per rack already exceeds $600 and could reach $900 within two years, according to Commercial Times.

What this means for consumers and businesses

Taiwan’s major motherboard makers and notebook manufacturers are already feeling the pinch, with some halting new motherboard development or mass production. Memory module manufacturers report that several planned Q3 and Q4 2025 releases have been postponed as companies wait to see how pricing evolves.

For end users, the impact is becoming unavoidable. With most PCs, laptops, game consoles, tablets, and smartphones now requiring at least 16GB of memory, Commercial Times estimates that memory alone could add nearly NT$3,000 (approximately US$96) to even basic office PCs in 2026 and beyond.

Brands like Asus and MSI are reportedly “aggressively stockpiling” memory modules in anticipation of continued constraints. Memory module manufacturers, including Transcend, ChipMOS, Hua Tung, and Formosa Plastics, have posted record-high financial performance in recent months—evidence of both robust demand and premium pricing.

What’s next?

Silicon Motion’s Kou indicated that major manufacturers are implementing allocation policies that prioritise different industries—smartphones, PC, and automotive—though he emphasised that “the majority will go to AI and AI servers.”

The question for 2026 and beyond is whether AI demand itself might moderate. A potential “AI bubble” burst could pause data centre expansion, while more efficient AI models with drastically reduced RAM requirements could ease hardware demands considerably.

Until then, consumers and businesses planning technology upgrades should brace for a challenging year ahead. The memory chip shortage of 2026 shows no signs of abating, and with Samsung’s dramatic price increases setting the tone, the rest of the industry appears likely to follow suit.
