Wages Are Rising, But Will Your Employer Follow Suit?

With inflation driving up the price of everyday essentials, salaries aren’t stretching as far as they used to, and the cost of living crisis continues to bite.

To give some perspective, in the U.S. average hourly earnings are up 4.6%, year-on-year and remote workers’ are reportedly banking savings of up to $5,000 per year. However the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that real average earnings for all employees decreased 0.1% in February.

The only tangible way to counteract this is to increase wages across the board, something tech workers are achieving, despite the headlines surrounding mass layoffs and declining profits.

In fact, recent data shows that 60.9% of tech professionals had an increase in salary between 2021 and 2022, and only 7.5% experienced a decrease.

Meanwhile in Asia, a shortage of skilled tech workers is spurring on the sector—tech jobs make up the majority of job titles that are on the rise in Singapore—as industries outside of tech are looking to digitize their operations.

Know your worth

If you’re yet to feel the benefit of a buoyant market and your employer hasn’t adjusted your salary in the last year, it could be time to negotiate a raise.

For starters, benchmark your current salary against average figures—senior engineers at management level can expect to command a salary of $196,193, those who work in software engineering are earning $160,469 per annum. Those employed in DevOps roles are getting in the region of $156,321 yearly, so you can use this as your blueprint and reference point.


Similarly, choose your timing well and come armed with examples of how you’ve completed tasks ahead of time and under budget or deals you’ve got across the line–getting a raise is as much about tactics as it is about talent.

Sometimes the only way to secure a higher salary is to switch jobs and according to data compiled by Indeed and Glassdoor, more pay is the primary reason employees look for a new job.

This is compounded by the fact that those who change jobs tend to experience higher pay than those who stay put.

Product Support Engineer, Product Liability and Field Performance

Tesla is seeking a Product Support Engineer to join its team in Palo Alto, California. This role pays special attention to vehicle accident investigations and customer claim investigations where safety systems, automated features, or vehicle behaviors are in question.
