ChatGPT expands use for business

  • ChatGPT Enterprise is explicitly developed for business use.
  • The tool offers enterprise-grade security and privacy as well as unlimited higher-speed GPT-4 access
  • OpenAI has upgraded ChatGPT Enterprise to protect data with enterprise-grade privacy, security, and deployment tools.

When OpenAI made ChatGPT available to the public in November last year, it was meant to help users improve their search capabilities by generating prompt replies. However, the tool has gained popularity to become one of the fastest-growing technologies of the decade.

Using generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, ChatGPT soon started making headlines worldwide. Business employees found the valuable tool in generating content such as business emails and reports, among other things.

Given its success in just a few months, more business leaders saw the potential of the technology in their operations despite concerns about the data being uploaded and shared publicly by OpenAI. Other tech companies also realized the potential of generative AI and began developing their models.

Today, many companies want to use generative AI tools like ChatGPT for their business, from large tech enterprises to small startups. While implementing generative AI in chatbot tools is the central focus, some organizations are even looking at broader use cases.

“The latest generative AI applications can perform a range of routine tasks, such as reorganizing and classifying data. But they can write text, compose music, and create digital art that has garnered headlines and persuaded consumers and households to experiment on their own,” stated a study by McKinsey.

Looking at the development of generative AI, ChatGPT was released in November 2022. Four months later, OpenAI released a new large language model (LLM) called GPT-4 with markedly improved capabilities. By May 2023, another generative AI company, Anthropic, unveiled updates to Claude. Claude processed 100,000 tokens of text, equal to about 75,000 words in a minute, compared with roughly 9,000 tokens when it was introduced in March 2023.

In May 2023, Google announced several new features powered by generative AI, including Search Generative Experience and a new LLM, PaLM 2, that will power its Bard chatbot, among other Google products.

In a recent Gartner webinar poll of more than 2,500 executives, 38% indicated that customer experience and retention are the primary purpose of their generative AI investments. This was followed by revenue growth (26%), cost optimization (17%) and business continuity (7%).

Introducing ChatGPT Enterprise

Interestingly, while other tech companies have released similar generative AI tools, most businesses still prefer ChatGPT. Realizing the capabilities and demand of ChatGPT, OpenAI has decided to upgrade the generative AI tool to focus more on business use cases.

As such, Open AI has unveiled ChatGPT Enterprise for business use cases. ChatGPT Enterprise will offer enterprise-grade security and privacy, unlimited higher-speed GPT-4 access, longer context windows for processing more extended inputs, advanced data analysis capabilities, customization options, and more.

In a statement, OpenAI believes AI can assist and elevate every aspect of working lives and make teams more creative and productive. The company believes the release of ChatGPT Enterprise marks another step towards an AI assistant for work that helps with any task, is customized for the organization, and protects company data.

“Since ChatGPT’s launch nine months ago, we’ve seen teams adopt it in over 80% of Fortune 500 companies. We’ve heard from business leaders that they’d like a simple and safe way of deploying it in their organization. Early users of ChatGPT Enterprise—industry leaders like Block, Canva, Carlyle, The Estée Lauder Companies, PwC, and Zapier—are redefining how they operate and are using ChatGPT to craft clearer communications, accelerate coding tasks, rapidly explore answers to complex business questions, assist with creative work, and much more,” stated Open AI.

A lot of employees use ChatGPT for work. But how secure is it?

When ChatGPT was launched, many users used it for work. However, they didn’t realize at the beginning that once they upload their data onto the platform to get results, the data remains there and becomes publicly available.

This led to a lot of problems with data privacy and security. For context, companies like Samsung have banned their employees from using ChatGPT at work after some employees uploaded a source code onto the platform when using the tool. Several other enterprises, especially those in the financial industry, have also banned or limited the use of ChatGPT for business queries.

Realizing this, the folks at OpenAI have upgraded ChatGPT Enterprise to protect data with enterprise-grade privacy, security, and deployment tools. Users will now own and control all their business data in ChatGPT Enterprise. OpenAI also mentioned that they do not train on business data or conversations and that their models don’t learn from business usage.

“ChatGPT Enterprise is also SOC 2 compliant, and all conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest. Our new admin console lets you manage team members easily and offers domain verification, SSO, and usage insights, allowing for large-scale deployment into the enterprise,” the statement said.

Apart from that, ChatGPT Enterprise removes all usage caps and will perform up to two times faster with GPT-4. OpenAI has included 32k context in an enterprise, allowing users to process four times longer inputs or files. Customers using ChatGPT Enterprise will also have access to advanced data analysis, a feature that enables both technical and non-technical teams to analyze information.

“If you’re looking to tailor ChatGPT to your organization, you can use our new shared chat templates to collaborate and build common workflows. If you need to extend OpenAI into a fully custom solution for your organization, our pricing includes free credits to use our API.”

OpenAI also highlighted several features that they are hoping to launch when ready. These include:

  • Customization – Securely extend ChatGPT’s knowledge with company data by connecting the existing applications.
  • Availability – Enabling ChatGPT for all team sizes so even smaller teams can benefit from it.
  • Power tools – Provide Advanced Data Analysis and browsing optimized for work.
  • Solutions for function – Specific tools for specific roles include data analysts, marketers, customer support, and more.

The future of AI and ChatGPT

While the updates from ChatGPT will most likely benefit businesses, a pair of studies by pollster Pew Research Center pointed to doubts about AI and ChatGPT in particular.

In a report by AFP, about two-thirds of the US-based respondents who had heard of ChatGPT say their main concern is that the government will not go far enough in regulating its use. The research also found that the use of ChatGPT for learning and work tasks has ticked up from 12% of those who had heard of ChatGPT in March to 16% in July. Pew also reported that 52% of Americans feel more concerned than excited about the increased use of artificial intelligence.

However, despite these concerns, businesses will most likely only continue to invest in generative AI tools like ChatGPT. Most business leaders feel that the benefits of these tools outweigh the problems a lot more and should not be a huge concern. However, business leaders know the steps they must take to ensure they use generative AI tools securely and do not compromise data.
