Facebook is actually making a phone!

Everyone including me thought Twitter is the new company which actually threatened Google. It turned out Facebook and not twitter is a thing to reckon with. As per GMail founder Facebook is the biggest threat to Google. Facebook will be the third most populous country if it were a nation. What does the company do if it has those many subscribers? It makes a phone to go with the app. When it does, Facebook will become a threat to more than just Google. Apple and Research in Motion and in some parts Nokia will get busy in their war rooms. 

Facebook is working with INQ to build at least two different phone models. Facebook has been denying all the media reports as rumors but it could as well be true because Bloomberg is reporting it. GigaOM which has been in strong favor of Facebook making a phone has reported this much earlier. 

Google though might be feeling the heat from the new competition will actually be the happy. Facebook phone will run Google’s Android operating system.Facebook phone will be sold in Europe in the first part of 2011 and will be launched in the US is the second part of 2011. AT&T will be the carrier in the US.  

“We’ve been working with INQ for a couple of years now to help them build a deeply integrated Facebook experience on their devices,” Palo Alto, California-based Facebook said in an e- mailed statement. “While we can’t speak for their future product development plans, we can say that our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social.”

One of the new phones is expected to feature a Qwerty-style keyboard and a touch screen, while the other would only have a touch screen and resemble the iPhone, one of the people said. (Bloomberg)

Bharti Airtel has just entered the mobile handset market in India with its brand Beetel, which directly threatens Nokia’s position in India. Why is there a sudden rush to make and sell phones? Would Twitter make a phone too? 

PS : INQ has entered India with its Facebook phone back in March this year.
