India telecom: 700m telephone subscribers, 10m broadband subscribers

India added 18.18 million mobile users in the month of August 2010, taking the total telephone subscribers past the 700 million mark. Of the 706 million telephone subscribers, 670 million are mobile subscribers. Overall tele-density of India has reached to 59.63 percent. This is nothing to be excited about because the urban tele-density (128.2 percent) is skewing the overall tele-density, thanks to the dual-SIM phones and cheap prepaid connections. Rural tele-density stands at 26.43 percent (at the end of June 2010).

India’s broadband subscriber base has crossed the 10 million mark. This is not impressive but a milestone nevertheless.

Bharti is still the market leader with 21.06 percent of market share in the number of subscribers. Bharti lagged behind Vodafone, BSNL, Unitech and Tata in adding new subscribers in August.

India mobile segment has a total of 16 operators and 15 operators has more than 0.01% share of the market. The market leaders – Bharti, Vodafone and Reliance – together have a 55 percent subscriber share. Unitech, Videocon and Sistema gained smartly.

Wireline segment is nothing to be excited about. There are seven players in the fray, state-owned operators BSNL and MTNL hold more than 83 percent subscriber base,  and the overall base is declining.
