What I Learned Executing Digital Transformations

Here, Prasad shares some of the lessons he’s learned while executing digital transformations for his clients.

Don’t mistake technology as the end goal

“Remember that digital transformation is an enabler for customer experience, efficiency and any other KPI you are measuring. Focus on the outcomes and then plan the roadmap. I usually see the reverse happening – people get excited about the latest and greatest technologies, and force-fit in the roadmap, forgetting why they planned for digital transformation in the first place.”

Leave it to the experts

“While brands should control their digital transformation roadmap, the actual execution can be best left to the experts who have dedicated focus in supporting digital transformation. The same goes for the, ‘buy versus build’ dilemma – unless there is a very compelling reason to build, it is best to go for  the ‘buy’ option.”

Governance matters

“Digital transformation should be championed by a brand’s executive leadership team. Digital transformation initiatives can end up involving a lot of stakeholders and changes. It is best if the leadership team is involved to ensure everyone is working towards the common goals and resolving any potential bottlenecks.”

Experiment first

“Rather than undertaking a huge digital transformation project, it is best to go with experimentation first. Tweak some parts of the system, test and tweak again. It is much easier to take this route as it is cheaper, faster and you learn along the way.”

Be clear on outcomes

“You should be clear what improvements you expect from digital transformation. I have seen companies buying entire stack but ending up not using it for various reasons. That is why I keep saying, focus on business objectives!”
