Bringing the cloud experience to apps and data everywhere

When it comes to cloud adoption, organizations are considering either the multi-cloud or hybrid cloud to digitally transform their business. While both cloud strategies have their strengths and weaknesses, one of the biggest challenges for organizations is integration and having a unified platform to view their workloads on the cloud.

Businesses want the capabilities of having access to their data and insights at speed. This means being able to get insights at the edge. And to achieve that, they need a platform that can enable them to have the cloud experience everywhere.

According to Joseph Yang, General Manager for Storage and Data Services at HPE Asia Pacific, most businesses are moving to the cloud as it promises agility, operational efficiency, and a quick time to market compared to on-premises.

As such, with trends showing that workloads today are happening on the edge, the public cloud is not necessarily the best place to run them. However, customers like this environment due to its flexibility and agility. To deliver this on-premises, edge to the cloud is the solution, as it enables businesses to have this cloud experience everywhere. And this is where HPE GreenLake comes in.

“No one has unlocked the secret of how to build edge to cloud capabilities. On the other hand, HPE is on its way there. HPE is building a system where the data system hardware is on-premises managed by the customer, but the management platform is hosted on the cloud, keeping the environment updated all the time,” commented Yang.

HPE GreenLake delivers infrastructure-as-a-service for business workloads – on-premises, fully managed in a pay-per-use model at the edge, in colocations, and in the data center. Simply put, HPE GreenLake brings the cloud experience to apps and data everywhere, enabling businesses to adopt transformative technology faster and simplify their operations.

As HPE GreenLake supports multi-cloud experiences everywhere, be it on-premises, the edge, the public cloud, or in a colocation facility, it continues to drive strong demand worldwide. Statistics from HPE showed annual recurring revenue of US$798 million as well as increased as-a-service orders up to 136% year over year.

HPE also continues to invest and innovate in HPE GreenLake to provide customers with one easy-to-use platform to radically transform and modernize their organization. Despite this, there are still concerns about the integration with the various cloud vendors, especially in managing the workloads there.

“GreenLake is just one of the clouds in the environment. When we talk about multi-cloud, you only have a few things to integrate. With HPE GreenLake, it becomes the point of ingratiation to automate all HPE infrastructure. You do not need to integrate each piece of hardware. You integrated against GreenLake APIs, GreenLake endpoints hosted on the cloud. It operates as one of the few multi-clouds that you have instead of a distributed set of infrastructure that needs to be integrated separately,” added Yang.

The HPE GreenLake platform provides the foundation for more than 50 cloud services, including electronic health records, ML Ops, payments, unified analytics, and SAP HANA, as well as a wide[1]array of cloud services from partners. In March, HPE unveiled 12 new cloud services in networking, data services, high-performance computing, and compute operations management.

When it comes to the competition with other vendors, Yang said that on-premise competitors offer their stack running on the public cloud. However, if you look at the success of this approach, it’s not very successful and it is not cheap. It is not a hybrid solution because it is the same solution running in a different location with extra overhead.

“For example, in contrast, HPE has Zerto (acquired last year) which it is integrating into its portfolio. The integration enables workload replication from an on-premises VMware or Hyper-V environment, running on a native on-premises stack into native AWS or native Azure. So, when you failover that environment, you no longer need to pay for that full-stack. You’re running on a native elastic block on a native elastic cloud. It’s a very different way of looking at how hybrid happens,” explained Yang.

Moving forward, Yang said customers need to look toward inventorying their data. From there, this is where they can decide on their cloud strategy. He pointed out that customers that start with a cloud-first view of the world oftentimes are not successful because they need to move everything to the cloud to succeed.

“If you start with a data-first view of the world, where the data is located, generated, and understanding the restrictions, they can apply the workload transformation on top that which will be the route to success. The thing is, we are not the only ones talking about this, it’s the way forward for everyone today,” concluded Yang.
