There’s a new cybersecurity vendor in town

There is a myriad of cybersecurity vendors around the world offering a wide variety of solutions today. While the larger cybersecurity vendors offer a complete suite of offerings in cybersecurity, others tend to focus on key areas of cybersecurity. The number of startups offering new cybersecurity solutions also continues to increase.

Today, almost every industry needs some sort of cybersecurity protection. Be it endpoint security, zero-trust security, or even email protections, businesses large and small rely on these solutions to ensure they do not fall victims to cybercriminals or have their businesses disrupted.

Trellix is the new cybersecurity company that is hoping to make its presence felt in the Asia Pacific region following the merger of two cybersecurity giants McAfee and FireEye. Compared to other cybersecurity mergers, Trellix plans to focus mostly on solving the big problems in the extended detection and response (XDR) space.

To understand more about Trellix and their plats for the Asia Pacific, Craig Nielsen, Vice President for APAC at Trellix shares his views on the plans for the company following the merger, the competition in the industry, as well as the challenges organizations, face when it comes to picking the right cybersecurity vendor for their business.

Following the merger, what plans does Trellix have for the APAC region in 2022?

Trellix will be focused on solving the big problems in the XDR space – a market that is growing fast globally but is only in its early stages in APAC, where there is a penetration rate of around 5-10%.

APAC has organizations that are at very different stages of maturity. From globally sophisticated organizations to fast-growing local organizations that lack the cybersecurity maturity to support their business, we are ready to help these organizations and governments in APAC across the continuum to do security better and more economically.

Our Go-To-Market (GTM) strategy will focus on skilling partners across APAC. We are looking to partner with system integrators and managed services providers (MSPs) who know how to engage customers wholistically and share our obsession with customer success. Partner Managed Services will be a focus delivery model where we will support MSPs across the region to level up their XDR service offerings.

Leading XDR capabilities should be available for all organizations, not just the largest and wealthiest organizations.

Will Trellix bring together the trusted heritage of expert teams to offer a fresh approach to cybersecurity?

Trellix is about building something new on the foundation of McAfee Enterprise and FireEye —two of the industry’s most prominent and successful cybersecurity brands. Our goal is to combine the best of two predecessors and offer a fresh approach that is centered on living security.

Looking at the ASEAN region, what is the biggest problem when it comes to cybersecurity here?

From e-commerce to Internet banking, ASEAN has seen rapid digitalization in a span of a few years, with the digital economy in Southeast Asia expected to reach US$360 billion by 2025. Yet, the region is so diverse, which means that there are varying levels of cyber readiness – with the cybersecurity scene in some countries only just starting to take off.

As a result, ASEAN is becoming a prime target for cybercriminals. One study found that ASEAN countries are being increasingly used as launchpads for cyberattacks. In fact, some ASEAN nations have emerged as global hotspots for major blocked suspicious web activities (up to 3.5x the standard ratio).

The growing interconnectedness of ASEAN adds to the complexity of the cybersecurity landscape here. The region will only be as strong as its weakest link, and as supply chain attacks continue to grow, cybersecurity will be a key challenge that demands intergovernmental coordination and cooperation.

That said, the region’s relatively nascent cybersecurity space presents an opportunity to adopt a modern approach to cybersecurity and we believe there is a better way to deliver the XDR architecture. ASEAN is at a pivotal moment in its digital transformation journey, and we’re honored to be part of efforts to build a stronger security ecosystem here.

Today, there is a myriad of cybersecurity vendors in the region. How can businesses pick the right solution for them?

The cybersecurity industry is filled with vendors trying to sell faster hamster wheels.  Organizations need to step back and look for solution partners who are solving the strategic problems that are holding their security teams back from success. They need to look for solution partners who can offer them consolidation opportunities, as well as partners who can deliver at scale. Of course, we may be biased – but we believe that Trellix, through our approach of building security architectures centered on ‘living security’, is well-positioned in all those areas.

While most businesses understand the importance of cybersecurity, the reality is that most technology leaders face challenges such as lean budgets and a skill gap. For instance, our recent survey found that 31% of Singapore organizations had their security budgets reduced during the pandemic.

Choosing the right security solution is therefore a balancing act, where the need for a robust cybersecurity infrastructure is often held up by cost and manpower constraints. One way to address this conundrum is through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), which can help to predict and detect attacks, identify root causes, and guide adaption and response through the automated workflow – improving operational efficiency and lowering costs.

When it comes to cybersecurity, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Organizations should choose a security solution that meets their unique needs while taking into account their resource limitations.

Lastly, cybercriminals continue to find new methods to wreak havoc on organizations. What new cybersecurity solutions or breakthroughs can we expect from the new company in dealing with modern threats?

Trellix will be investing in innovation to build an XDR cybersecurity leader. Our XDR ecosystem has a differentiated ability to secure the digital experience against cyber threats using threat intelligence capabilities developed through the scale and diversity of our sensor network. We will also be continuously offering new solutions that leverage AI, machine learning and advanced telemetry, such that emerging threats today will become tomorrow’s new protection.
